Ever faced problem like ‘DNS look-up failed’ or you entered a website but you had been forwarded to somewhere else?
These problems are because of the incorrect DNS servers in your router settings.
This Netgear Technical Support will tell you what the DNS is and will guide you through the process of changing the DNS in your Netgear Router.
DNS stands for Domain Name Server. What it does is it connects the IP address of the site which the computer knows to the human readable hostnames. A website with easy name is pretty easy to remember but remembering a long series of numbers for a specific website is not possible for everyone. DNS makes our life pretty easy this way. Everything DNS does is behind the scene and the end user does not even know about it.
Netgear Technical Support suggests you that before changing the DNS server of your network check if you are having DNS problems from all the devices or just one. If it is just one device, then the problem is because of the device itself. But if all the devices are having the same, it is the problem of your ISP and you may try changing your DNS address in the router settings.
Changing the domain name is a very easy and small process. Follow the steps below to change your DNS server on your router:
1. Open the web browser on your computer and go to http://www.routerlogin.com or http://www.routerlogin.net or enter the IP address of your router.
2. Enter the username and password when prompted.
3. Go to Internet > Use these DNS Servers.
4. Enter the primary and secondary DNS of your choice and click Apply.
Power cycle your router once after changing the DNS. After the power cycle is done, your router should now use the new DNS servers which you have assigned.
You can use many DNS other than what your ISP uses. Some popular DNS servers are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. Other popular DNS server is OpenDNS which is 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. Enter the former one in primary DNS and later one in Secondary DNS for both of the DNS services.
