So you are a gamer and want to play a game but can’t stop your younger brother to watch YouTube on a different device which will end up in high pings and disconnections? Or you want to stream something but someone else is using your network at the same time which results in choppy streaming? Quality of Service can solve your problem.
Quality of Service (QoS) is an advance feature present in many NETGEAR routers with the help of which you can set priorities for different type of data or ports like applications, gaming, LAN ports or you can also give priority to devices also by specifying their MAC address. QoS greatly helps in router optimization.
There are different methods for different NETGEAR routers. Old and new NETGEAR routers have different ways to use it. The steps are below:
Enable QoS on older NETGEAR routers:
1. Go to configuration page.
2. Enter username and password when prompted. NETGEAR smart wizard page will appear.
3. Go to ADVANCED > QoS SETUP.
4. Turn Internet Access QoS on from there.
5. Click on Add Priority Rule. A Priority rules screen will then appear.
6. You can select application, gaming, Ethernet LAN port or MAC address from there.
7. You can select any internet application in application section like a messenger or a web browser etc.
8. You can set priority level to low, normal, high or highest for the selected application in the Priority section.
9. Hit apply.
Setting priority for online gaming:
1. Select Online Gaming under priority category.
2. Select priority as low, normal, high or highest.
3. Add a new game and select the game you want to prioritize under Applications section.
4. Specify connection type like TCP, UDP or whatever that game uses and also specify port numbers.
5. Hit apply.
Enable QoS on new NETGEAR routers:
1. Open router’s configuration page.
2. Go to ADVANCED > SETUP > QoS SETUP.
3. Go to SETUP QoS RULE > Add priority RULE.
4. Now you can prioritize applications exactly by following the steps written above.
Setting up priority for devices:
1. Under Priority category, select MAC address from list.
2. Select the priority to low, normal, high or highest.
3. Click apply.
Setting up priority for LAN ports:
1. Under Priority category select Ethernet LAN port.
2. Then select the port number you want to use like 1, 2, 3 or 4 etc.
3. Select priority to low, normal, high or highest.
4. Click apply.
To delete a service entry:
1. Go to ADVANCED > SETUP > QoS SETUP.
2. Click SETUP QoS RULE.
3. Select entry you want to delete by clicking on the radio button.
4. Click delete.
5. Hit apply.
