USING YOUR OLD NETGEAR ROUTER AS REPEATER

Throwing away your investment isn’t a smart idea no matter what. One must make the most out of it. Just because you got a brand new shiny router doesn’t mean that your old one is useless. You can use it as a repeater with your new router to get most of it. Netgear Technical Support suggests you to do it as it can greatly improve the range and performance of your existing network.

This Netgear Technical Support article will guide you through the process. Base Station router is the name of your main router in the network and repeater is your old router which we will make a repeater of. This name will be used in the article.

Setting up Base Station:
The channel of your Base Station and the repeater must be the same for proper functioning the encryption type should be WEP.

In the settings of the router, Choose Wireless Base Station and then input the MAC address of the Repeater in the box.

Setting up Repeater:
  1. Disable the DHCP server: Most of the routers acts as DHCP server and more than one DHCP server in same network can cause many problems. So it is better to disable it. After disabling the DHCP, you have to set a static IP address on your pc to access the Repeater settings.
  2. Configure wireless Settings: You can either use same SSID or different SSID for Base Station and Repeater. If you want to differ the Base Station and repeater, use different SSID or if you want users to automatically connect to the closest unit, and move from one to another, use different SSID. Encryption type and should be WEP just like Base Station and channel should also be the same as Base Station.
  3. Setting up Wireless Repeating Function: Choose Wireless Repeater in the settings and input the Repeater’s IP address. It must belong to the same subnet mask of the Base Station and must not be in use by any other device on the network.

A message will then pop up telling you that WPS feature will not work since the wireless repeating only works with WEP encryption. Click on OK.

On accessing the Attached Devices, you will see the IP address of the Base Station which means that the repeater is successfully set up and is ready to use.
